These custom fiberglass balloon-shaped props were manufactured for window displays for a European luxury brand. The project required an exceptionally smooth FRP surface and a high-gloss vacuum metallized finish in red, gold, silver and black.
Custom Fiberglass Balloon Props for Luxury Window Displays
SOARPEAN manufactured these oversized balloon-shaped props for a European luxury brand. Designed as hanging decorations for retail window displays, the balloons were produced in fiberglass (FRP) and finished in several highly reflective metallic colors, including red, gold, silver and black.
Although the form appears simple, achieving the required surface quality was technically demanding.
Why Fiberglass Was Used
Fiberglass was well suited to this project because it allowed us to create a lightweight hollow structure while maintaining the precise rounded balloon shape required by the design.
For suspended window display props, weight is an important consideration. The FRP construction provided sufficient strength while keeping the finished pieces practical for installation and repeated retail use.
The Main Challenge: Vacuum Metallizing
The most difficult part of the project was not forming the fiberglass balloon itself. It was achieving the mirror-like metallic surface.
The customer required an extremely high-quality finish suitable for luxury retail environments. Any small imperfection in the fiberglass surface could become much more visible after the reflective coating was applied.
For this reason, the fiberglass shells required careful preparation, repeated surface treatment and detailed inspection before the final finishing process.
High-Gloss Metallic Surface
To create the reflective appearance, the balloon props were finished using a vacuum metallizing process.
This process created the highly reflective metallic effect visible on the finished products. Different finishing colors were then used to produce the red, gold, silver and black versions required for the display.
Because the surfaces are curved and highly reflective, maintaining a consistent finish across the entire balloon required particularly careful control of both the substrate preparation and finishing process.
Quality for Luxury Retail Displays
Luxury retail display projects often require a much higher level of surface quality than ordinary decorative props.
The finished balloon decorations needed to remain visually clean and highly reflective when viewed at close range and under strong retail lighting. The completed pieces achieved the smooth, mirror-like appearance required by the customer while retaining the lightweight advantages of fiberglass construction.
This project demonstrates how fiberglass can be combined with specialized finishing processes to create custom decorative elements for demanding retail and window display applications.
