How Are Custom Fiberglass Products Made? A Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process

Custom fiberglass products require more than simply making a mold and applying fiberglass. From concept evaluation and prototyping to mold making, FRP fabrication, finishing and quality inspection, each stage affects the final quality. Here is how SOARPEAN approaches a typical custom fiberglass project.

How Are Custom Fiberglass Products Made?

Custom fiberglass products can take many forms, from sculptures and retail display props to furniture, planters, product replicas and equipment enclosures.

Unlike standard mass-produced products, custom fiberglass manufacturing usually starts with a drawing, 3D file, reference image, physical sample or even an initial concept. The manufacturing process then needs to be developed according to the product’s size, shape, surface finish, quantity and intended application.

At SOARPEAN, a typical custom fiberglass project involves the following stages.

1. Project Evaluation

The first step is to understand what needs to be manufactured.

Useful information may include:

  • Drawings or 3D files
  • Product dimensions
  • Reference images
  • Required quantity
  • Color and surface finish
  • Intended application
  • Installation or structural requirements

Not every project requires complete engineering drawings at the beginning. For some projects, reference images and basic dimensions are enough for an initial manufacturing evaluation.

2. Prototype and Model Making

For products with complex shapes, a master model or prototype is usually produced before mold making.

Depending on the project, the model may be created through CNC machining, 3D printing, hand sculpting or a combination of different methods.

This stage establishes the shape, proportions and important surface details of the finished fiberglass product.

3. Mold Making

Once the model is approved, a production mold can be made.

The mold structure depends on the size and complexity of the product. Simple forms may use relatively straightforward molds, while complex shapes may require multi-part molds so that the fiberglass parts can be released and assembled correctly.

For some one-off or special projects, alternative fabrication methods may also be considered instead of developing a conventional production mold.

4. Fiberglass Production

Fiberglass reinforcement and resin are applied inside the mold to form the FRP structure.

The laminate thickness, reinforcement method and internal structure can be adjusted according to the product’s dimensions, strength requirements and application.

After curing, the fiberglass part is removed from the mold and prepared for trimming and assembly.

5. Trimming and Assembly

Molded fiberglass parts are trimmed, joined and assembled into the required final structure.

For larger or more complex products, fiberglass may also be combined with metal frames, mounting plates, hardware or other materials.

The objective is not only to reproduce the required appearance, but also to create a structure suitable for transportation, installation and actual use.

6. Surface Finishing

Surface finishing is one of the most important stages in custom fiberglass manufacturing.

The process may include sanding, filling, primer application, painting, polishing and other decorative finishes.

Depending on the design, the final surface can be matte, gloss, metallic, textured or produced in a specified color.

7. Quality Inspection and Packing

Before packing, the finished product is checked for dimensions, appearance, surface quality, assembly and other project-specific requirements.

Export packing is then designed according to the size, shape, weight and transportation method of the product.

Large or irregular fiberglass products may require custom cartons, wooden crates or specially designed internal protection.

Custom Fiberglass Manufacturing at SOARPEAN

SOARPEAN has been manufacturing custom fiberglass products in Xiamen, China since 2006.

Our work includes fiberglass sculptures, retail display props, mannequins and display forms, product models and replicas, furniture, planters and vases, equipment enclosures and complex custom FRP components.

We support projects from initial concepts and prototypes through mold making, fiberglass production, finishing, assembly, quality inspection and export packing.

If you have a custom fiberglass project, send us your drawings, 3D files, dimensions or reference images. We can review the project and recommend a suitable manufacturing approach.
